Welcome Summer – it’s official, you are here with your hot, hot fun filled days. To celebrate your arrival we are having a Summer Solstice Celebration. In typical “didn’t really plan ahead” style this is what I have whipped up for the day.
Solstice comes from the Latin words “Sun” and “to Stop” – it was named that way because the sun looks like it stops in the sky at high noon and creates more light in the Northern Hemisphere than any other day. It is also the longest day of the year. So with that in mind we are going to play:
Sprinkler Stop and Go: We’ll turn on the hose/sprinkler and run around and stop when the water is off and run when it’s on.
Water Balloons: I’m filling up 30 water balloons, putting them into plastic tubs around the yard and we will set up some targets to toss at. It’s going to turn into a plain old water balloon “fight” at some point but sure to be lots of fun on this very hot day.
Sunny Music: We have a few songs that talk about the sun – Mr. Sun, Day-O, You are my sunshine…so we’ll do some singing and dancing to those.
Puff Paint Sunshine: In honor of the sun – we will make some puff paint Sun paintings. Here is an easy recipe:
Mix equal parts flour and salt, I’m making 2 table spoons each, a few drops of food coloring, dash of baking powder, add water to achieve a smooth paint consistency. The paint needs to go on thick for it to puff up – Paint on cardstock or cardboard (something that can fit in the micro of course) When done painting – Microwave on high for 15 seconds (possibly another 10 seconds) and watch it dry and puff up…totally fun! Smaller paintings puff better.
We will be making yellow paint and painting something like a sun; puffing them, cutting them out and gluing onto another sheet of paper and decorating with streamers, string, glitter etc…
Ice Cream Dudes: For dessert nothing says summer like ice cream! I’ll be serving make your own ice cream dudes (also called clown cones) so I got some ice cream cones, m&m’s for eyes, sprinkles, syrups etc… Serve a scoop of ice cream, place cone on the top and decorate.
If you want to see what else we’ll be doing all summer check out our summer fun series.
Peace & Happy Summer!
PS – Don’t forget sunscreen.
